rootkits 300x237 What are Rootkits? Rootkits are software that enable administrator-level access to a computer or computer network while while actively hiding it's presence from administrators and software protections. Rootkits originally came from UNIX computers but in the last few years they have evolved and invaded Windows computers. The term "rootkit" comes from the fact the a programs gains administrative privileges or root access on UNIX machines and they hide their presence so they can work undetected.

Rootkits may consist of spyware, adware, viruses, trojans, and other malware to be use to monitor traffic and keystrokes, create a "backdoor" into the system for the hacker's use; alter log files; attack other machines on the network; and alter existing system tools to escape detection.

Slow running computers unwanted popup ads, redirection of websites and search can all be signs of a rootkit. Rootkits are designed to hide from most antivirus and antispyware software that is also why it needs a special software to detect them.

If you are experiencing system slowdown, blue screens, computer locks up or fails to respond to any kind of input from the mouse or keyboard, Windows settings are changed, network slow down. Keep also in mind that good rootkits are stealthy, If the rootkit is working correctly then  most of the symptoms aren't going to be noticeable.

Remanufactured Ink Cartridges – A Green Alternative

Posted: 04 Mar 2011 09:40 PM PST

Remanufactured Ink Cartridge 253x300 Remanufactured Ink Cartridges A Green AlternativeWith the high cost of cartridges for your printers and for so many printers being used today at homes and offices, remanufactured ink cartridges are in higher demand than ever before. There are several reasons to use a remanufactured inkjet cartridges. It might be a little surprising to some why everyone does not use them.

First and foremost, we are all very aware of the environment and how we have to protect it. Because there are so many printers today, the number of the ink cartridges is quadrupled. When the cartridge is empty, they are tossed into our landfills. Plastic does not biodegrade and will be in the landfill forever. The solution to this problem is to use remanufactured ink cartridges.

Even though the printers are very inexpensive or sometimes free when you purchase a computer, the manufacturer depends on the revenue that the consumer pays for the new replacement ink cartridges. Cartridges are very expensive, but you cannot operate a printer without them. One way to save money on the cartridges is to purchase ones that are remanufactured. These inkjet cartridges come from recycled ink cartridges and perform every bit as well as new ones.

Manufacturers who produce new ink cartridges will argue that the reuse of a cartridge will damage your printer. This is not the case. The companies that refill the cartridges have high standards that they meet to produce a quality product. You can shop online for a manufacturer who sells remanufactured ink cartridges. They carry most every brand, and you will be able to save a good amount of money. You will also be helping to protect our environment.

What more could you ask for? Also, with the high cost of oil (with no signs of it getting cheaper any time soon), the plastic used to make ink cartridges will continue to rise as well, making all ink cartridges more expensive. Just another reason to recycle inkjet cartridges and used remanufactured ink cartridges instead!

How To Find the Right Printer For You

Posted: 27 Feb 2011 06:46 PM PST

The best way to find the right printer for you is to define exactly what you need it to do, and then find a printer that performs those jobs well. By buying a printer that does these well, and does only these jobs well, you’ll end up paying for the quality tasks you need, and not wasting money on tasks you don’t. Whether you’re printing a lot of paper cheaply, you want good looking photos, or you just need a simple, inexpensive home printer, there’s something on the market for you.

If you’re printing a lot of paper, you want to keep the cost down, and you don’t mind them all being in black and white, a laser printer is the best bet for you. This is the standard printer for many offices, as the cost per page is lower than any other printer, and it’s quite good quality too. It’s a bit more expensive up front, but you’ll save in the long run, so it’s an excellent investment.

If you need a basic printer for your home, and you’d like to keep the cost down, you may want to look into a portable printer. These printers are designed to work with laptops, and so they take up very little space, but they’re geared towards professionals, and so the quality is excellent. Since all they do is print, they’re inexpensive too, so it’s a great printer if you don’t plan on printing much, but need it to be good quality when you do.

Finally, if you need good photos, then the best all in one printers on the market will actually do a pretty good job. Unless you want a photo specific printer, in which case you’d look into a dye sublimation printer. These only print photos, but they do a great job.

The best printer for you is dependent on the job you want it to do. Define the job, and you’ll have your printer.

An Internet Dongle Gives You Freedom

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 05:02 PM PST

The internet dongle is not new technology. It has been around for a while, but developments in technology have made it faster and easier to connect to the internet. They are simple and easy to use devices that plug into your laptop's USB slot. You then have internet access anywhere you go without the need of a WiFi connection. Access the internet anywhere, during a taxi ride, in a park or in a hotel.

The first question to ask yourself before investing in a usb internet dongle, is how do you plan on using the internet while on the go? The answer to this question will lead you to choosing the right payment plan. Those who will be using the internet infrequently while on the go will benefit most from a pay as you go plan. While those who look to use the internet frequently while on the road will benefit most from a contractual plan.  Most of the time the internet dongle will come free when you sign up to a contract.

After figuring out if you are a pay as you go or a contract type user, the next thing to decide is which internet provider to go with. This decision should be based on strength of the coverage in your area. In certain areas internet providers will have strengths and weaknesses. Make sure that the internet dongle and provider you choose has a strong coverage in your location. You could end up being stuck in a long term contract with slow internet speeds.

These questions need to be answered: how will you use the internet, what for, and which internet provider provides the best coverage in your area.  Getting the right internet provider and the right pricing plan will save you headaches caused by slow internet speeds and penalty fees for overusing your internet dongle.
