Database management systems can be broadly classified into two types:

Desktop database management systems

These database systems are much cheaper than the server based ones and they are an apt choice for companies with a very small workforce. They can be run on simple desktops and have an interface that is exceedingly user friendly, which requires little or no knowledge of programs like MySQL. However, there are some database systems that require a little background in computer programming and they can be purchased based on your preferred profile. A few examples of servers that fit into this category are Lotus Approach, File Maker Pro and Paradox

Server database management systems

These are considerably much more expensive than the former one and they have a plethora of functions. Such systems have a lot of scopes and flexibilities for the users. They work brilliantly for organizations with a large workforce. These systems need constant monitoring because of the volume of information that they process on a day to day basis. Some of the examples of databases that fall under this category are Oracle, IBM DB2 and Microsoft MySQL servers, which are all high-end performance servers.
